Know me before you teach me
By bringing together learner information from multiple systems and sources, Te Rito makes it easier to:
- Know who students are, what makes them unique, and what they need to achieve
- Embed a sense of belonging and a motivation to learn from day one
- Minimise the need for parents and whānau to repeat basic enrolment information
- Tailor learning and support plans based on near-real-time, up-to-date information
- Take a holistic approach to learning and wellbeing
Supporting teaching and learning
Te Rito recognises the partnership between learners, their principals and teachers, and whānau.
It supports open conversations about learning so together you can explore the choices and resources available to support learners from day one.
Talk to your kura or school’s principal and teachers about whether they’re connected to Te Rito, and what that means for you.

Te Rito’s information is taonga
All information about a learner belongs to the learner, not a kura or school, and a copy of it can be requested by them, or their parents, at any time.
Te Rito's learner information is provided by kura and schools and if it’s incorrect, parents should contact the kura or school to have it updated.
It's the responsibility of the kura or school to keep it up to date, safe and secure, and Te Rito has processes in place to protect it too.
For more on Te Rito's protection of information, see Security and Privacy.
Te Rito's access for learners
Learners use a single login to access Ministry-approved education platforms and applications, including Te Rito.
Similar to the Education Sector Logon (ESL) for educators, it’s a secure solution reducing the need for multiple passwords while also managing authentication and security.
If you're a principal and would like to pilot student access with Te Rito at your school, sign up at Register for student access
For more about the single login for students, see the Ministry for Education website
